pretty damn close.
“pretty damn close” I was. to being the one, you said
when people asked. it rolled right off your tongue
so sweet. yet, so bitter. just like it all ended
suddenly. but, no denying we felt it coming
creeping. crawling, surrounding us like a ghostly creature
lurking. mistakes, anger, time catching up with us
together. getting in our own ways,
divided. finally. is this what you really want?
wanting to be someone’s enough. it’s not that simple,
lines drawn. when we got tired of trying
to hold on. for dear life and snapped.
broken. like an old china doll, forgotten on your shelf
upright. stoic. never letting too much out,
afraid. your heart beyond closed off
bolted shut. out the door before we could save it
love. you were always close enough for me.
